Frequently Asked Questions about Tooth Removal

How much will a tooth removal cost?

Our dentists will provide you with the estimated cost of your Tooth Removal after the consult. Although we try our very best to provide you with a range of the estimated cost, but an estimate is an estimate only. This cost may vary depending upon the extent of the treatment and the difficulty of the procedure. In case of any complexity of the procedure, the Dentist will inform you as required and may need to alter the cost.

Will it hurt during the procedure?

We believe that the process of tooth removal can be uncomfortable, but it doesn’t have to be painful. Our caring Dentist will ensure to anaesthetize or numb the tooth and the gums around it, so that you are pain-free throughout the procedure.

Will it bleed afterwards?

We ensure that the bleeding has been controlled before you leave. To control the bleeding the dentist may apply gentle pressure on the wound with the help of the sterile gauze or use a haemostatic agent to stop the bleeding or place stitches if necessary.

Will it hurt afterwards?

You will be provided with verbal and written after care instructions. If needed, a pain relief prescription will be provided to help you manage any post operative pain at home.

What happens after my tooth removal?

We offer complimentary review appointment where the Dentist will check the tooth removal site or wound to ensure that proper healing is taking place and there is no risk of any infection or complication. As discussed at your consult visit, the dentist will then discuss about the next step in the tooth replacement options.

Why do I need to come in for a consult?

For every tooth removal, a consultation with the dentist is required. The Dentist will examine your tooth clinically and radiographically to assess the existing condition of the tooth, why it needs to be removed, risks and complications involved, type of the tooth removal (general or surgical), length of the appointment, cost involved. The Dentist will then discuss all the above factors with you and finalise the verbal and written consent to proceed with the removal of the tooth. At Tooth Smart Dental Cannon Hill, the cost for the Tooth Removal Consult is $69 and for X-ray is $63.

Why do I need an X-ray before tooth removal?

Tooth removal is an oral surgical procedure. Just like you wouldn’t expect your GP to perform a surgery without proper scans, a Dentist wouldn’t remove your tooth without the X-ray. X-rays are required to assess and collect sufficient information about the root structure, root length, condition of the bone around the tooth, proximity of the tooth to any nerves or blood vessels to ensure a safe removal of the tooth.

Will there be any ongoing cost or additional expenses?

Additional expenses may be incurred in case of any complications requiring hospitalisation or a referral to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in case of any unexpected complication. Other relevant costs like a temporary or permanent replacement of the tooth, will be discussed with you at the time of the consult.

Can I smoke after my tooth removal?

Smoking can delay healing of the extraction wound and increase your chance of developing a dry socket. We recommend abstaining from smoking for at least next 48 hours.

Do I need to tell my dentist about my doctor prescribed medications or over the counter medications before my tooth removal?

The Dentist will check all your medication history at the time of the consult. It is important to mention all the medications that you might be taking even if they are over the counter medications like supplements.

Can I take a flight after my tooth removal?

We recommend not to fly for the next 24 hours.

Can I do exercise or go to gym after my tooth removal?

We recommend taking it easy and rest for first 24 hours to help your body recover fast. Avoid driving or operating any heavy machinery when under the influence of any strong pain relief medication.
