After Care Instructions for Temporary Crown

A Temporary Crown has been placed after your tooth has been prepped to receive a permanent crown. It is important to look after your temporary crown.

Chewing food

Please avoid chewing food until the numbness has subsided. Depending upon the aesthetic used by the dentist, it may take anywhere between 1-4 hours for the numbness to fade away.

Hard and sticky foods

Avoid eating hard or sticky foods on that side. Some examples will be chewing gum, seeded bread, and nut or muesli bars, etc. Chew on the opposite side of the mouth preferably.

Brush and floss

Please brush your teeth twice a day as usual, but floss with care. When flossing, remove floss from the side of the tooth rather than pulling up in between the teeth.

Mouth rinsing

If your dentist has requested to rinse your mouth with a mouthwash, then please follow the instructions. Rinse 3 times a week until the next appointment. Use SAVACOL.

Post-operative sensitivity

You may experience sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure after having the crown preparation done. The sensitivity may last for a couple of hours to a couple of days. Use a desensitizing toothpaste to help with sensitivity and avoid anything too hot too cold or hard for the first couple of days. If the sensitivity gets worse, then please contact our office immediately.

Bite

If your bite feels uneven, or high (as if this tooth is the only tooth touching the opposite teeth in your mouth), please book an appointment to get the bite corrected.

Loss of temporary crown

The temporary crown protects the tooth underneath it. It holds the gum around the tooth in its right position. Therefore, it must stay in place until the time it is replaced by the permanent crown. If your temporary crown comes off or breaks or you lose it, contact our office immediately so that it can be replaced.

Jaw ache

If your jaw is aching after the appointment then, it is probably from opening your mouth wide for a long appointment. Using some heat packs on the jaw muscles will relieve the ache. However, if you experience any toothache, contact our office immediately and take Nurofen for pain relief until you see the dentist.
