After Care Instructions for Dentures

It is important to care for your dentures to ensure they serve you well for a long period of time and to maintain them in a good condition. With proper care and maintenance, the dentures should last for long time. Please follow the below instructions carefully:

  • Wear your dentures as directed by the dentist. Please clean your teeth before wearing your dentures. Your dentures should be clean before you wear them. Patients who wear full dentures still need to brush the gum with a soft brittle tooth brush every day to maintain healthy gums in the mouth.
  • When not in use at night, the dentures should be soaked in a cup of cold water. A dried-out denture can be distorted because the acrylic material in the denture base can warp even though it might feel rigid.
  • Clean the denture after each meal with mild detergent and brush. Avoid using toothpaste as it is highly abrasive. When cleaning the partial dentures with clasps, pay attention not to bend the clasps in any manner. This can snap the clasp unexpectedly.
  • Avoid using hypochlorite (i.e., a salt of the hypochlorous acid) solution to clean or immerse the chrome cobalt or metal dentures as it can stain and discolour the metal parts. Do not use hot water to soak the dentures as it can cause the denture base acrylic material to turn white.
  • Try to use denture cleaner sparingly to avoid bleaching the acrylic material. Please keep away from extreme temperature.
  • Over time, the dentures might no longer fit well due to worn out, gum tissue change, and/or bone loss. Relining, rebasing, or even remaking the dentures may be required when then. Keep using an ill fitted denture might contribute to further bone loss.
